The 7-step process (what actually happens)
Measure & assess
Free video estimate or on-site visit: square footage, subfloor type (concrete slab vs. wood joists), levelness, moisture, transitions at doorways.
Demolition
Furniture out, old floor and baseboards up, haul-away. Carpet is fastest (about half a day per 500 sq ft); glued hardwood or tile takes 1–2 days.
Subfloor prep
The biggest hidden-cost step: leveling compound where needed ($2–5/sq ft in affected areas), rotten board repairs, and — on any concrete slab — a moisture test. Skipping the slab moisture check is the #1 cause of buckled floors a year later.
Material acclimation
Wood flooring sits in your home 48–72 hours before installation so it adjusts to indoor humidity. Rushing this step causes gaps and cupping.
Installation
LVP and laminate click-lock float over underlayment (fastest); engineered wood is glued or clicked; solid hardwood is nailed (wood subfloor only). Typical pace: 300–500 sq ft per day, door jambs undercut, transition strips between rooms.
Trim & finish
Baseboards or quarter-round go back on, caulk and touch-up — the step that makes it look finished.

How long it takes

Watch out for (the honest-contractor list)
