The 8 steps of a bathroom remodel
Design & material selection
Tile, fixtures, vanity, and glass get chosen first — special-order tile is a common schedule-killer, so we order finishes before demolition starts.
Demolition (1 day)
Down to the studs and subfloor. In pre-1990s homes this is where hidden leaks, rot, or mold behind the old tub show up — hold a 10–15% contingency so a discovery doesn't stall the project.
Plumbing rough-in
Moving fixtures along the same wall: about $500–1,200. Relocating a toilet: $2,500–5,000 (the drain line has to move). Slab trenching adds $1,000–3,000. Keeping fixtures in place is the biggest money-saver in a bathroom.
Waterproofing — the non-negotiable step
Tile is not waterproof; the membrane behind it is. Cement board plus a dedicated waterproofing membrane in the wet area, then a water test before any tile goes up. A skipped membrane is a ceiling stain downstairs two years later.
Tile (2–4 days)
Walls, floor, niche, and correct slope to the drain. Labor is priced by complexity — small-format or diagonal patterns take longer.
Fixture installation
Toilet, tub or shower hardware, vanity, mirror, and lighting go in.
Shower glass (5–7 day wait)
Custom glass is measured only after tile is done, then fabricated. We use the wait for caulk, paint, and finish work so no days are wasted.
Water test & walkthrough
Final leak check, caulk inspection, punch list — then a 2-year workmanship warranty on our work.
